Who's Your Hero?

We all have heroes:
parents, teachers, sports figures, celebrities, inventors, adventurers, historical, and fictional characters.

The other night the Sister Missionaries stopped by our home and we got to talking about Rich's 16 years in the Navy and the heroic things he'd done: Building housing for the thousands of Vietnamese refugees in Guam when they fled their country in the early 70's.
Tracking the Challenger, as it exploded, from his P-3 in 1986.
Just two of many experiences that have made him MY hero.

Anyway, that led us to the "War Chapters" in the Book of Mormon. We talked about the heroes found there.

Then today in Harry's email, he requested a Book of Mormon Heroes theme for his "Absent Birthday Party" that we are planning.
yeah, totally have a smashing party for me! and i would very much
appreciate pictures! ummmm, i don't know for a theme. jesus themed?
book of mormon themed. Or all of the book of mormon war hero people
themed!! that would be awesome. Nate should be Captain Moroni, Andrew
can be Helaman... Roko can be Teancum! and i guess Ollie can be Lehi?
or someone else :3 idk, who sabrina or baby Kelly would be. Maybe not
all of them have to be war hero people. Like maybe Ollie could be
Nephi. and sabrina could be sariah? kelly could be a wicked daughter
of ishmael.

It seemed very coincidental... So I've spent a lot of today searching out heroes in the BofM. I found both men and women of great faith, courage, and endurance. And I thought I'd share some with you.

(These AMAZING posters of Book of Mormon Heros can be found at RealHeroPosters.com
The artist of the Real Hero Posters, Steve Nethercott, explains:
“In a world full of fantasy heroes and pop-stars, we should never forget the real heroes, with real courage, real strength, and real stories.”)

Ammon
Alma 17:19-39 as servant
25 ... I will be thy servant. Therefore Ammon became a servant to king Lamoni. And it came to pass that he was set among other servants to watch the flocks of Lamoni, according to the custom of the Lamanites.
33 And those men again stood to scatter their flocks; but Ammon said unto his brethren: Encircle the flocks round about that they flee not; and I go and contend with these men who do scatter our flocks.
37 But behold, every man that lifted his club to smite Ammon, he smote off their arms with his sword; for he did withstand their blows by smiting their arms with the edge of his sword, insomuch that they began to be astonished, and began to flee before him; yea, and they were not few in number; and he caused them to flee by the strength of his arm.
Alma 19:35-36
35 And it came to pass that there were many that did believe in their words; and as many as did believe were baptized; and they became a righteous people, and they did establish a church among them.
36 And thus the work of the Lord did commence among the Lamanites; thus the Lord did begin to pour out his Spirit upon them; and we see that his arm is extended to all people who will repent and believe on his name.

Army of Helaman
Alma 53:20-22
20 And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.
21 Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.
22 And now it came to pass that Helaman did march at the head of his two thousand stripling soldiers, to the support of the people in the borders of the land on the south by the west sea.

Mothers of the 2,000 Stripling Warriors
Alma Chapter 56
46 For as I had ever called them my sons (for they were all of them very young) even so they said unto me: Father, behold our God is with us, and he will not suffer that we should fall; then let us go forth; we would not slay our brethren if they would let us alone…
47 Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.
48 And they rehearsed unto me the words of their mothers, saying: We do not doubt our mothers knew it ...
55 And now it came to pass that when they had surrendered themselves up unto us, behold, I numbered those young men who had fought with me, fearing lest there were many of them slain.
56 But behold, to my great joy, there had not one soul of them fallen to the earth; yea, and they had fought as if with the strength of God; yea, never were men known to have fought with such miraculous strength; and with such mighty power did they fall upon the Lamanites, that they did frighten them; and for this cause did the Lamanites deliver themselves up as prisoners of war.
64 B.C.

Captain Moroni
Alma 60: 36
Behold, I am Moroni, your chief captain. I seek not for power, but to pull it down. I seek not for honor of the world, but for the glory of my God, and the freedom and welfare of my country.
Alma 46: 12
And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.
62 B.C.

Samuel The Lamanite
Helaman 16:1-3
1 And now, it came to pass that there were many who heard the words of Samuel, the Lamanite, which he spake upon the walls of the city...
2 But as many as there were who did not believe in the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither with their arrows.
3 Now when they saw that they could not hit him, there were many more who did believe on his words, insomuch that they went away unto Nephi to be baptized.

Moroni Son of Mormon
Mormon 8:3-5
3 And my father also was killed by them, and I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people. But behold, they are gone, and I fulfil the commandment of my father. And whether they will slay me, I know not.
4 Therefore I will write and hide up the records in the earth; and whither I go it mattereth not.
5 Behold, my father hath made this record, and he hath written the intent thereof. And behold, I would write it also if I had room upon the plates, but I have not; and ore I have none, for I am alone. My father hath been slain in battle, and all my kinsfolk, and I have not friends nor whither to go; and how long the Lord will suffer that I may live I know not.

Happy New Year

This is Harry's newest companion, Elder Bensige.

:o he's from Sweden!! and miracles just follow the
guy! He's super good :) And there's something a bit interesting about
him, he has aspbergher's. (no idea how to spell that) so i've been put
in some great trust by president! President calls me personally to
tell me about it and the first thing he says is, "Elder Larsen, who's
the nicest missionary in the whole mission?" uhh, i don't know, who?
"Elder Larsen, it's you." whoa! Hey that's cool! :D so president
apparently trusts me a good deal i guess. but anyway, i feel like i've
been prepared for this since 6th grade! :o Remember Alexander Altman?
He had the same thing, so i'm wondering if the Lord has been in this
next companionship for a good long while now... It shall be
interesting to see! I'm excited :)

We met him on Christmas when we SKYPED with Harry. I'd been anxious to hear what they'd been up to and how they spent New Year's Eve...
but then...

we totaly didn't do anything for new years because my companion was sick like the whole week. he still is!! There's this nasty virus going round called the noura virus... apparently it's in the US too? anyway, i think my companion caught it. so i havent done anything in like... a whole week. i'm going crazy!!!!!!! i sat in the flat for like four days straight, then went to church, came home and slept, then my companion slept for 36 hours straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well not straight i guess. but basically. he got up to eat. so yeah, my week has not been very exciting! I can quote the entire 21 verse conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3... and various other scriptures. i've gotten pretty good at solitaire. and i've slept a lot too :3 so not a whole lot going on! i hope your week has been a bit more exciting than mine :3 and uh. yeah! that's basically it o.O i haven't done anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! blah!!!

An Ad for Missionaries

Doesn't this look like an ad for going on a mission?

He's grown up so much both physically and spiritually. It's hard to believe he's been out for only 8 months.
